Modern Woman

September 17, 2010

Based around women being viewed as a sex symbol.
No matter the class/status a woman has she will always be viewed as a sex symbol. Women will never be able to escape these views. It is human nature to have an attraction to other sexes. This is the same for men as well.

I consider gifs a form of video art. They are moving images in sequence. They also provoke an emotional response. I feel gifs mostly capture a moment in time and add repetition to the moment to emphasize and overdramatize. What was once a subtle part of a clip/video is now art on its own.

Pipilotti Rist

Above is the video “I’m Not the Girl who Misses Much” by Pipilotti Rist. What I enjoy the most about this video is the glitches and how it forms abstract images. I also enjoy how Rist is unfocused in the video. At first this gave me an eery feeling. Then I started to feel ease and comfort with the contortion of the body. Pipilotti is affective in contorting the image and figure of herself in the video. She also places these ambiguous clips with mainstream pop music. Which allows us to question society and its view on women and the female figure. I personally connect with this artist. I feel we have similar styles with abstraction. I am also a fan of obscure and unclear images. I enjoy the ambiguities she creates. I try to create ambiguities within my work.

Here is another video of Rist. This deals with sexuality and the human body.
